Sometimes, all it takes is a spark.

As ninth graders from Tacoma’s Lincoln High School toured the Port of Tacoma earlier this month, the possibilities of a future maritime career felt very real.

“I’m getting to know about all these new job opportunities that I didn’t know we had here,” student Amanyah Jones said in a video produced by Tacoma Public Schools. “Everything’s just interesting to me.”

The Port of Tacoma has received the 2023 Environmental Stewardship Award from the Washington Public Ports Association (WPPA) for its continued environmental leadership and in recognition of the recently completed Lower Wapato Creek habitat site in the Tacoma Tideflats.

Raising a kid is hard, especially if you are a southern resident Orca boy-mom. A recent study showed raising a male-whale is so energy intensive that orca moms are less likely to have another baby after having a son. Having a daughter, however, did not reduce the chance of having another baby.

Twelve local projects were selected to receive funding through the Port of Tacoma’s Local Economic Development Investment Fund (LEDIF) in 2023. Of the 23 applications received, the port’s LEDIF review committee, led by Commissioners Ang and McCarthy, recommended twelve projects move forward in the process. Funding for these projects, and total investment of $250,000, was approved by port commissioners at their May 4 meeting.

SEATTLE — The Unified Command composed of Tacoma Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound, Washington Department of Ecology and Puyallup Tribe of Indians, with support from several other agencies, which was stood up to respond to the April 8 fire aboard the fishing vessel Kodiak Enterprise moored in the Hylebos Waterway in Tacoma, was stood down Friday.
