Below is information on the potential lease extension negotiations between the Port of Tacoma and Darling Ingredients, Inc. as of Jan. 2024

  • Darling Ingredients, Inc. is currently negotiating an extension of its ground lease with the Port of Tacoma for property located at 2041 Marc Ave.
  • The Darling facility has been at its current location in the Tideflats since 1971. The facility closed after a fire in 2022.
  • The current ground lease expires on September 30, 2028. Before making substantial investments into rebuilding their facility, Darling engaged with the Port to negotiate an extension of the current lease term.
  • Lease negotiations with Port tenants are confidential until terms are finalized for Commission consideration.
  • If the Port Commission approves an amended lease, like any Port tenant, Darling would be required to obtain all necessary permits before beginning operation, including an air permit from the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency and construction permits from the City of Tacoma.
  • Any potential lease extension will be an amended and restated lease which must be approved by the Commission in public session and subject to a first and second reading before Commission approval.
  • Negotiations are ongoing, and the date this potential amended and restated lease will appear on a Commission meeting agenda for action has not yet been confirmed. Information on Commission meeting dates and agendas can be found here.
