Twelve local projects were selected to receive funding through the Port of Tacoma’s Local Economic Development Investment Fund (LEDIF) in 2023. Of the 23 applications received, the port’s LEDIF review committee, led by Commissioners Ang and McCarthy, recommended twelve projects move forward in the process. Funding for these projects, and total investment of $250,000, was approved by port commissioners at their May 4 meeting.

SEATTLE — The Unified Command composed of Tacoma Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound, Washington Department of Ecology and Puyallup Tribe of Indians, with support from several other agencies, which was stood up to respond to the April 8 fire aboard the fishing vessel Kodiak Enterprise moored in the Hylebos Waterway in Tacoma, was stood down Friday.

We want to express our sincere appreciation to the Tacoma Fire Department, the US Coast Guard, Washington Department of Ecology and all of the agencies and individuals involved in the response to the Kodiak Enterprise vessel fire this week. We are extremely thankful that no one was critically injured and relieved to hear that the fire should be declared fully extinguished soon. Additional thanks to the Department of Ecology, the Environmental Protection Agency and their contractor CTEH, for continuously monitoring air quality at the incident site and in nearby neighborhoods.

Update from U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Northwest: Due to decreased smoke conditions, the temporary shelter in place order is no longer in effect. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is still conducting air monitoring to assess the air quality for the safety of the public.

The Kodiak Enterprise ship fire operations in the Hylebos Waterway continue. Crews are still using master streams from the dockside and waterside to cool the hull, as the fire burns itself out. While it appears that most of the flammable material on board has burned, it is likely that smoke will continue to be visible throughout the day.
