Year of the Snake: The winding road to economic recovery

  • Walter Kemmsies, chief economist at Moffatt and Nichol, will discuss the state of the economy and prospects for U.S. West Coast ports this year.
  • Lisa LaBruno, senior vice president of retail opertations at the Retail Industry Leaders Association, will examine the transformation of the retail industry as emerging mobile technologies and demographics shape the lives of consumers—and the supply chain.

CEO John Wolfe will also report on the progress tallied in the first year toward the measures of our strategic plan, and we will recognize Summit Award winners for outstanding contributions to Port business and our community.

2013 Summit Award nominees

Business Magnet - A Port customer or member of the supply chain for business development efforts and investments that lead to recognizable increase in business volume or new business opportunities for the Port of Tacoma, and have a positive economic effect for the citizens of Pierce County.

Nominees: Citadel Marine Center, Emerald Home Furnishings, Regal Logistics, SAFE Boats, Tripak, Washington United Terminals

Environmental Stewardship - A Port customer or tenant for a project, program or initiative that supports Pierce County's sustainability and honors biodiversity and the interconnected nature of industry, people, wildlife and natural systems.

Nominees: Evergreen Line, Trident Seafood, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics

Livable Community - A Port customer or tenant for a project, program or initiative that demonstrates the business community's positive contribution to Pierce County through social responsibility. Criteria include philanthropy and charitable giving, community service and employee volunteering, community engagement and outreach, and employee development.

Nominees: APM Terminals, Targa Sound Terminal, the Transportation Club of Tacoma

Recipients will be chosen by a selection committee that includes:

  • Don Meyer, president of the Port commission
  • Marilyn Strickland, mayor of Tacoma
  • Debbie Fischer, president of the Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association of Washington State
